Science and Research

Research at the Institute

The research carried out at the Institute of Experimental Biology focuses on the processes and phenomena involved in the organisation and functioning of living cells, tissues and organisms. The model systems studied are viral, microbial, plant, animal and human systems, which are investigated using a variety of approaches from contemporary molecular biology, genetics, genomics, proteomics, gene and protein engineering, physiology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, biophysics, etc. In addition to basic research, the Institute of Experimental Biology also carries out applied research, contributing to our understanding of the nature of certain genetic and infectious diseases in humans and to improving their diagnosis, or to the development of new biotechnological processes.

Teams with similar teaching and research focuses form the individual departments of the Institute. Their main research activities focus on molecular diagnostics and the taxonomy of microorganisms, molecular cytogenetics, molecular and stress biology of plants, tumour biology and genetics, molecular anthropology, environmental microbiology, microbial biotechnology, stress physiology of plants, cellular and molecular physiology of human and animal systems, and enzyme engineering. The wide range of methods employed and the diversity of the subjects studied provide a solid foundation for the scientific training of students and ensure their strong employability in the labour market.

Research Laboratories

Individual laboratories and research groups are organised into departments, which, through their scientific and teaching work, specialise in specific fields of experimental biology.
