WHERE TO GO
The castle was founded in the middle of the 13th century by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II. In the middle of 14th century under the reign of Jan Jindřich and his son Jošt of the House of Luxembourg Špilberk became the seat of Moravian margraves. During the 17th and 18th century the castle was converted to a Baroque fortress which is known as the „Jail of nations“ for its reputation of the most feared prison in Habsburg monarchy.
The Villa of Greta and Fritz Tugendhat from the years 1929–1930, designed by the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, is an installed monument to Modern architecture. It is the only example of Modern architecture in the Czech Republic recorded on the UNESCO List of World Cultural Heritage.
Underground "Labyrint pod Zelným trhem"
You can enjoy the unique and mysterious atmosphere of the maze of medieval corridors and cellars in the "Labyrint pod Zelným trhem" (Labyrinth under Cabbage Market). Moreover, the tour does not lack the element of surprise, for example you can see a real medieval pillory. Guided tours to the Labyrinth are available for groups (maximum 25 persons). The entrance is at Zelný trh 21.
Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul
The Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul (Petrov) is one of the dominating features of the city of Brno. A Romanesque church was originally built on this site; in the 14th century it was re-built in the Gothic style. Right from its inception, Petrov was an important church for the city.
The biggest and probably the oldest square in Brno, formerly called Lower Market, has still kept its original triangular shape, determined by the former routes and a creek. It is still vibrant theater and music performances, summer festivals, shows and Christmas market are taking place there. In short, this place is the beating heart of Brno.
Mendel Museum, Mendel's square and brewery
The Mendel Museum is the place where the abbot and scientist Gregor Johann Mendel worked. More info can be found online: Mendel Museum
